Southport Primary School has a policy of inclusion of students with special needs. We have a large special education unit which provides support to students with physical impairment, intellectual impairment, autistic spectrum disorder and combinations of those disabilities. A large number of our staff have specialist knowledge in those areas of disabilities. Other students with special needs include students for whom English is their second (at least) language and these students and their teachers receive support from a teacher with specialist knowledge in this area. All students with special needs are included in regular classrooms, with staff at Southport Primary School being very skilled at providing an inclusive curriculum and environment to cater for these many different needs.

Southport Primary School is also fortunate to have a number of staff with advanced skills in the areas of teaching literacy, numeracy, early intervention and Reading Recovery. The school also has a full-time music specialist who also coaches students for choir and eisteddfods. Two specialist instrumental teachers also provide lessons in a wide range of instruments to students from Year 3. Our physical education specialist also provides coaching to district level swimming squads. She is also a trainer for St John’s First Aid and has trained 22 staff at our school in CPR and 10 Senior First Aid Certificates. One of our experienced teachers also provides coaching and team management support at the district level for basketball.
Collegial support and mentoring of undergraduates and new graduates are also undertaken by staff at Southport Primary School. Many of our staff have participated in professional development with a focus on mentoring, in order to provide appropriate and effective support to others.
